Those are not arbitrary. Concrete gains strength through a chemical reaction that needs water and time, not through drying out. A slab that looks finished on day two is nowhere near able to carry a car.
Driving too early is the single most common way a new driveway gets damaged, and the damage does not always show immediately. Cracks that appear months later often trace back to a load applied in the first week.
Below are the timelines, what changes them, and what you can do to help the slab reach its strength.

Heavy vehicles wait longer than 7 days. Work trucks, loaded trailers, RVs, dumpsters and delivery vehicles should stay off until the slab is at or near full cure, and on a driveway poured at residential thickness some of those loads are not appropriate at any age.
If you have a moving van, a concrete truck or a roll-off dumpster scheduled, tell us before the pour. It changes the thickness and reinforcement we spec, not just the waiting period.
This is the part that surprises people. Concrete does not harden by losing water — it hardens through hydration, a reaction between cement and water that continues as long as the moisture is there.
A slab that dries too fast stops that reaction early and ends up permanently weaker. That is why fresh concrete gets kept damp rather than left to dry, and why a pour in direct Alabama summer sun needs more attention than one in mild weather.
Concrete moist cured for 7 days is about 50 percent stronger than uncured concrete. That is a large difference for something that costs almost nothing to do.
The ideal curing range is 50 to 85 degrees. Above that, the surface loses water faster than the reaction can use it. Below it, hydration slows and the timeline stretches.
North Alabama gives you both problems across a year — summer heat that dries a slab too quickly and winter cold that slows it down. A pour scheduled in February will not be ready on the same schedule as one in April.
A thicker slab does not cure slower in any meaningful way, but it carries more load at any given age. A 6-inch driveway at 7 days handles more than a 4-inch one at the same age.
Heavy rain in the first hours can damage the surface finish. Freezing temperatures in the first 24 hours can be seriously damaging, because water expanding inside the slab disrupts it before it has strength to resist.
Water curing for 3 days achieves about 80 percent of the benefit of a full 7-day cure, so even a partial effort is worth making if you cannot manage the whole week.
Usually nothing visible on the day. The damage is to the internal strength the slab was still developing, and it shows up later as cracking, surface scaling or a section that fails under normal use years earlier than it should have.
That is what makes it worth taking seriously — the consequence is deferred, so it is easy to assume you got away with it. If a slab has been loaded early and is now cracking, leveling or repair may buy time, but the underlying strength cannot be restored.
