Under ACI 330, a standard-duty car parking area needs 5 inches of concrete over compacted earth. Heavy-duty areas — truck lanes, delivery approaches, dumpster pads — need 6 to 6.5 inches, with a 4-inch subbase under the 6-inch option.
The revised standards matter commercially, because they reduced or eliminated the subbase requirement for standard-duty lots. A 5-inch slab poured directly over properly compacted earth is now a recognized specification rather than a shortcut.

The distinction that matters on a real site is not the whole lot but the traffic pattern within it. Parking stalls carry cars; drive lanes, the approach from the street, and the area a garbage truck pivots on carry far more.
Specifying one thickness across an entire lot either overbuilds the stalls or underbuilds the lanes. Neither is what you want to pay for.
A dumpster pad takes concentrated load from a truck that lifts, shakes and drops a full container in the same spot every week. Poured at stall thickness, it fails early and visibly.
The same applies to loading areas and any place equipment sits repeatedly. Our loading dock, equipment pad and dumpster pad work is specified separately from the surrounding lot for exactly this reason.
Joint spacing scales with slab thickness:
Panels get kept close to square rather than long and narrow. A long, thin panel cracks across its middle regardless of how well the joints on either end were cut.
Joint depth follows the usual rule of one quarter of the slab thickness. Cut too shallow, the joint does not control anything and the slab cracks beside it.
ACI thickness figures assume a competent, uniformly compacted subgrade. Clay-heavy soil around Huntsville is not that by default.
Uniformity matters more than depth. A lot that is well supported across most of its area and soft in a few spots will crack at the transitions, and those soft spots need digging out and replacing with crushed rock before anything is poured.
Drainage is the other half. Water getting under the slab erodes base material and leaves voids, and a slab spanning a void fails across it. Grading the lot so water leaves it is part of the structural specification, not a finishing detail.
Concrete costs more up front and lasts substantially longer with less maintenance. It also handles standing loads better — an asphalt lot deforms where heavy vehicles park or turn repeatedly, which is why many owners end up with a concrete dumpster pad and approach in an otherwise asphalt lot.
In this climate the heat argument applies at commercial scale too: asphalt softens in sustained summer heat, and a lot with delivery traffic shows it.
A parking lot quote that does not distinguish between stalls and drive lanes is not a specification, it is a square-foot number. Ask what thickness goes where, what the subbase is, and how the joints are laid out.
